Goat

Capra aegagrus hircus

Coat color is controlled by multi-allele ASIP (~10-20 documented alleles) interacting with MC1R extension. Polled (hornless) is genetically tightly linked to a 11.7 kb deletion ~200 kb upstream of FOXL2 that causes intersex sterility in XX homozygotes (Pailhoux et al. 2001 Nature Genetics): this is the canonical "Polled-Intersex Syndrome" (PIS). Tennessee Fainting Goats carry an autosomal dominant CLCN1 mutation causing myotonia congenita (Beck et al. 1996 PNAS). Nubian goats carry two distinct lysosomal storage diseases at appreciable carrier frequency: beta-mannosidosis (MANBA, lethal) and MPS IIID (GNS/G6S, severe). UC Davis VGL maintains tests for CM (myotonia), G6S, and beta-mannosidosis.
